We provide a range of minor surgical treatments, which are performed by a female Consultant Gynecologist in a CQC safe environment.

What do we treat?

The most common procedures are listed below:

  • Hymenectomy
  • Bartholin’s cyst marsupialization
  • Cyst removal
  • Vaginal lesions
  • Genital warts
  • Removal of Skin Tags

We offer treatments to be carried out under local anaesthetic or sedation.

Removals

We offer discrete and pain-free removal of skin tags, vaginal lesions and cysts – as these can be carried out under local anaesthetic or sedation.

The Bartholin’s glands are two small glands located at about the 4 o’clock and 8 o’clock positions around the vaginal opening. They secrete mucus that helps lubricate the vagina. A Bartholin’s cyst occurs when the duct of one of these glands becomes obstructed. The mucus secreted by the gland accumulates, leading to the formation of a cyst. When the cyst becomes infected, it is called a Bartholin’s abscess.

Many Bartholin’s cysts are small and asymptomatic, meaning they do not cause noticeable symptoms. If the cyst becomes larger, it may cause discomfort or a noticeable lump near the vaginal opening. Larger cysts can cause pain, especially if they become infected or inflamed. Painful urination or difficulty with sexual intercourse can occur if the cyst becomes inflamed or infected.

Marsupialization is a surgical procedure used to treat Bartholin’s cysts, particularly those that are recurrent or have not responded to other treatments. The goal of marsupialization is to create a permanent drainage pathway for the cyst to prevent it from reforming.

The procedure is usually performed under local anaesthesia which numbs the area around the cyst. In some cases, general anaesthesia may be used, especially if the patient is in a lot of discomfort or if the procedure is being done in conjunction with other surgeries.

  1. Incision and Drainage: The surgeon will make a small incision in the cyst wall. This is typically done at the site of the cyst near the vaginal opening. The fluid inside the cyst is drained out through this incision.
  2. Marsupialisation: The edges of the cyst wall are sutured (stitched) to the surrounding tissue. This creates a permanent opening or pouch (marsupialisation) that allows any residual fluid to drain and prevents the cyst from closing up and refilling. A CO2 laser can be used to laser the base of the cyst wall to prevent recurrence.
  3. Closure and Dressing: After suturing, a small ribbon gauze is inserted into the open cyst, which is removed by the patient the following day.

Postoperative Care

  1. Pain Management: Pain relief medications, such as over-the-counter pain relievers or prescription painkillers, may be recommended to manage any discomfort. Applying warm compresses to the area can help reduce pain and promote healing.
  2. Hygiene: Taking sitz baths (sitting in warm water) several times a day can help keep the area clean and reduce discomfort. Patients should avoid using irritants like scented soaps or lotions near the area.
  3. Monitoring for Complications: Watch for signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or discharge, and contact a healthcare provider if these occur. Attend follow-up appointments as scheduled to ensure proper healing and to address any concerns.
  4. Activity Restrictions: Patients may be advised to avoid strenuous activities or sexual intercourse for a period of time to allow proper healing.
