Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at altering the size or shape of the labia minora, which are the inner folds of skin surrounding the vulva. This procedure is often performed for a variety of reasons, including:

  1. Cosmetic Concerns: Some individuals may feel self-conscious about the appearance of their labia and seek labiaplasty for aesthetic reasons to achieve a more symmetrical or reduced size.
  2. Physical Discomfort: Enlarged or uneven labia can cause discomfort during physical activities, such as biking or running, or can lead to irritation and chafing when wearing certain types of clothing.
  3. Functional Issues: Some may experience discomfort or pain during sexual intercourse due to the size or shape of their labia, prompting them to seek surgical intervention.
  4. Medical Reasons: In some cases, the procedure is performed to correct congenital abnormalities.

Whatever your reason may be, we are able to support you and provide you with the best treatment and aftercare. Labiaplasty can be performed under local or general anaesthesia, depending on the extent of the surgery and the patient’s preference. You will have a consultation with the surgeon beforehand, in which you will be examined and the procedure will be explained. On the day of the procedure, the labia will be marked, excised and sutured with dissolvable stitches. You will have regular follow up appointments with the surgeon to monitor your recovery. Recovery from labiaplasty generally involves some downtime, with patients advised to avoid strenuous activities and sexual intercourse for a few weeks to allow proper healing. Swelling, bruising, and discomfort are common post-surgery, but these symptoms usually subside over time.

FAQs

When should I have a labiaplasty?

Plus

The decision to undergo labiaplasty is highly personal and should be based on the patient’s circumstances. Some common reasons someone might consider having a labiaplasty are physical discomfort during sports, intercourse or wearing certain clothing; functional reasons such as difficulty in passing urine or cosmetic reasons.

What happens during a labiaplasty procedure?

Plus

During a labiaplasty, a surgeon performs several steps to reshape and reduce the labia minora (the inner vaginal lips). Here is an overview of what typically happens during the procedure:

  1. Consultation and Planning: Before the surgery, the patient meets with the surgeon to discuss their goals, medical history, and any concerns. The surgeon will explain the procedure, potential risks, and expected outcomes.
  2. Anaesthesia: This can be local anaesthesia (numbing the area), or light anaesthesia (where the patient is asleep). The choice of anaesthesia depends on the extent of the surgery and the patient's preference.
  3. Marking the Area: The surgeon marks the areas of the labia that need to be reshaped or reduced. This ensures precision during the procedure.
  4. Incision and Tissue Removal: The surgeon makes small incisions along the pre-marked areas of the labia minora. Excess tissue is carefully removed. There are two common techniques used:
    • Trim Technique: The surgeon trims the edges of the labia to achieve the desired size and shape.
    • Wedge Technique: A wedge-shaped piece of tissue is removed from the central part of the labia, preserving the natural edge. This technique may help maintain the natural contour of the labia.
  5. Closure: After removing the excess tissue, the surgeon carefully stitches the incisions with dissolvable sutures.
  6. Post-Operative Care: The patient is monitored for a short period after the surgery to ensure there are no immediate complications. They are then given detailed post- operative care instructions and a course of prophylactic antibiotics.
  7. Recovery: Initial recovery usually takes a few weeks, during which swelling and bruising gradually subside. Full recovery can take up to 12 weeks, during which the final results become more apparent.

It's essential for patients to follow their surgeon's post-operative instructions carefully to ensure proper healing and to contact their surgeon if they experience any unusual symptoms or complications. Regular follow-up appointments are typically scheduled to monitor the healing process and address any concerns.

Is the procedure painful?

Plus

Labiaplasty can involve some discomfort and pain, both during and after the procedure. Here is an overview of what to expect in terms of pain management and recovery:

During the Procedure:

  • Anaesthesia:The procedure itself is not painful because it is performed under anaesthesia. Depending on the patient's choice and the surgeon's recommendation, this can be:
    • Local Anaesthesia: Numbs the surgical area, and the patient remains awake but should not feel pain.
    • Light Anaesthesia (sedation): The patient is asleep and unaware of the procedure.

After the Procedure:

  • Immediate Post-Operative Period: After the surgery, patients are monitored closely. Pain management typically includes medications to control discomfort. Swelling and bruising in the surgical area are common, contributing to discomfort.
  • First Few Days: Patients can use over-the-counter pain medication to manage discomfort in the initial days following the surgery. Applying ice packs can help reduce swelling and numb the area to alleviate pain. It's important to rest and avoid strenuous activities, which can exacerbate pain and swelling.
  • First Few Weeks: Pain levels generally decrease over the first few days to weeks. Patients are advised to avoid activities that put pressure on the surgical area, such as cycling, running, and sexual intercourse, until cleared by their surgeon.
  • What are the complications of the procedure?

    Plus

Labiaplasty, like any surgical procedure, carries potential risks and complications. It's important for individuals considering the surgery to be aware of these potential issues. Some possible complications include:

    Immediate Complications:

    1. Bleeding: Excessive bleeding during or after the surgery can occur, although it is uncommon.
    2. Infection: Infections can develop at the surgical site, leading to pain, redness, and discharge. You will be provided with a course of antibiotics to minimise this risk.
    3. Hematoma: This is a collection of blood outside of blood vessels, which can cause swelling and pain.
    4. Adverse Reaction to Anaesthesia: Reactions to anaesthesia can occur, although these are generally rare and manageable.

    Short-Term Complications:

    1. Pain and Discomfort: Post-operative pain and discomfort are common but typically manageable with medication.
    2. Swelling and Bruising: Swelling and bruising around the surgical area are common and usually subside within a few weeks.
    3. Numbness: Temporary numbness or changes in sensation around the labia can occur and typically resolve over time.

    Long-Term Complications:

    1. Scarring: Scarring is inevitable to some degree, but excessive or noticeable scarring can occur in some cases.
    2. Asymmetry: There may be asymmetry or unevenness in the appearance of the labia after surgery.
    3. Changes in Sensation: Permanent changes in sensation, such as numbness or increased sensitivity, can occur, though this is uncommon.
    4. Pain During Intercourse: Some individuals may experience pain during sexual intercourse, which can persist long-term in rare cases.

    Rare but Serious Complications:

    1. Tissue Necrosis: This is the death of tissue due to inadequate blood supply, which can require additional treatment or surgery.
    2. Chronic Pain: Persistent pain that lasts beyond the typical healing period can occur in rare cases.
    3. Urinary Issues: Difficulty urinating or changes in urinary patterns can occur, although this is rare.

It's essential for patients to discuss the potential risks and complications with their surgeon during the consultation process and to have a clear understanding of what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.

What is the recovery time after the procedure?

    Plus

Recovery time after labiaplasty can vary based on individual healing rates and the specifics of the procedure. However, most patients can expect the following general timeline:

    First Few Days:

After the surgery, patients typically spend a few hours in the clinic to ensure they are stable and to manage any immediate pain or discomfort. Patients will experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which are managed with pain medications and cold compresses. It is essential to rest and avoid any strenuous activities. Keeping the area clean and dry is crucial to prevent infections.

    First Week:

Pain and swelling are usually the most intense during the first week but gradually start to improve. Patients should continue to avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and exercise. Walking is encouraged to promote blood circulation, but it should be gentle and limited.

    2-3 Weeks:

Swelling and bruising typically begin to subside significantly. The dissolvable sutures will start to dissolve or fall out on their own. Patients can slowly resume light activities, but should still avoid any activity that puts pressure on the surgical area or involves vigorous movement.

    4-6 Weeks:

Most of the swelling and bruising should have resolved, and the surgical area should be healing well. Many patients can return to most of their normal activities, including work and light exercise, but should still avoid activities that cause friction or pressure on the surgical site, such as cycling or running.

    6-8 Weeks:

Patients are typically cleared to resume sexual activity after 6-8 weeks (if not earlier), provided healing is complete and there are no complications. While the majority of healing occurs within the first 6-8 weeks, complete healing can take several months. The final results in terms of appearance and sensation may not be fully realized until this time.

    Long-Term Care:

Regular follow-up appointments with the surgeon are essential to monitor the healing process and address any concerns. Any scars will continue to mature and fade over time. Using scar treatment products, as recommended by the surgeon, can help minimise their appearance.

    Tips for a Smooth Recovery

    • Adhere to Post-Operative Instructions: Following the surgeon's care instructions is crucial for optimal healing.
    • Wear Loose Clothing: Loose, comfortable clothing helps prevent irritation and pressure on the surgical area.
    • Maintain Hygiene: Keep the area clean and dry to prevent infections.
    • Stay Hydrated and Eat Healthily: Proper nutrition and hydration support the healing process.

It is important for patients to communicate with their surgeon throughout the recovery process, report any unusual symptoms, and attend all scheduled follow-up appointments to ensure proper healing and address any potential complications promptly.
