Final Words

At Gynaedoctors, we’re on a mission to empower female patients in their health journeys through clear, compassionate education into the female anatomy and the many complexities it holds. In this article, we demystify hymenectomies, exploring why women seek this surgery and why it’s performed.

Everything You Need to Know About the Hymen

Before we dive into hymenectomies and the many reasons for this procedure, we first need to talk about the hymen. Because understanding the hymen, its role and perception in society, is important for a broader understanding of the context surrounding hymenectomies.

What is the Hymen?

Often disregarded as not particularly important, a woman’s hymen is a crescent-shaped piece of tissue that allows menstrual flow and vaginal discharge to pass through. It is thin, elastic, and located at the opening of the vagina.

Many women are told from a young age that their hymen will break when they have intercourse for the first time. While this can be true for some, it isn’t true for everyone. In fact, most hymens break during regular activities such as physical exercise, tampon use, and horse riding – often without a woman even realising it.

What is the Hymen’s Purpose?

Now that you know what a hymen is, you might be wondering what purpose it serves. While most other parts of a woman’s body – and certainly her vulva anatomy – have a clear purpose, the hymen doesn’t have a known job role

There is some research that suggests the hymen might serve to keep bacteria out of the vagina, but at this stage there is nothing that suggests the hymen is a particularly important, practical, or even necessary part of a woman’s anatomy.

A Heightened Awareness of the Hymen

Although the hymen is not visible, for many women being aware of its existence is becoming more heightened. In fact, it is often something women worry about – particularly when they are in a sexual relationship.

Feeling unhappy or insecure about one’s hymen is becoming increasingly common, particularly in younger generations who are bombarded with images of perfection across social media and perfect female physiques in pornography.

While most women are aware these female ideals rarely reflect the anatomical diversity of real women around the world, their prevalence contributes to feelings of body dysmorphia and shame. This is just one of the reasons why we’re seeing a rise in genital surgeries, such as hymenectomies.

What is a Hymenectomy?

Women are increasingly aware of and undergoing hymenectomy procedures. This is a minor surgical procedure where a part or all of the hymen is removed. The goal is to alter the size and shape of the hymen, especially in cases where excess hymenal tissue is causing vaginal obstruction, discomfort, or other medical issues.

When is a Hymenectomy Medically Necessary?

While a Hymenectomy is a procedure that can be performed for cosmetic reasons, it is also medically necessary for some. Here are a list of reasons why a hymenectomy might be recommended:

Imperforate Hymen

Around 1 in 1,000 people have an imperforate hymen. This is a congenital condition where the hymen has no opening at all. This lack of an opening prevents menstrual blood from exiting the body, causing painful symptoms such as: abdominal pain or swelling, absence of periods, and pain or difficulty urinating or passing bowel movements.

How a hymenectomy solves this: a hymenectomy creates a natural opening in the hymen to allow normal menstrual flow to exit the body.

Septate Hymen

When a woman has a septate hymen, the hymen has a very small or oddly positioned opening. This can make it difficult for her to insert a tampon, have pain-free intercourse, or comfortably undergo a pelvic exam.

How a hymenectomy solves this: a hymenectomy surgically corrects a septate hymen, improving a woman’s comfort across all the areas mentioned above and many more.

Thick Hymen

While most hymens break during physical exercise or intercourse, some individuals are born with especially thick, inelastic hymens. This means they don’t break or stretch easily, making penetration during sex painful or impossible. Thick hymens can also make it difficult or impossible to insert a tampon.

How a hymenectomy solves this: a hymenectomy resolves this by thinning or completely removing the hymenal tissue.

Excess Hymenal Tissue

Sometimes, women have excess hymenal tissue that protrudes, causing irritation and discomfort – especially during physical activity or when wearing tight clothing.

How a hymenectomy solves this: excess hymenal tissue is easily resolved with minor surgical intervention. A hymenectomy will cut away the excess tissue, restoring the hymen to a comfortable size and shape.

Having a Hymenectomy for Cosmetic Reasons

Many women seek hymenectomies for cosmetic reasons, reflecting broader themes around shifting perceptions of femininity and a wider cultural acceptance of cosmetic surgeries being acceptable and no longer taboo. There are many cosmetic reasons women seek hymenectomies, including:

Aesthetic Improvements

Whether due to cultural discourse, social media, or pornography exposure, countless women are unhappy with how their vagina looks. Therefore, just as women pursue surgeries such as breast enhancement or labiaplasty, some women view hymenectomy as a way to improve the appearance of their vagina.

Improving Comfort and Confidence

Women with protruding labias often experience discomfort in tight clothing, during physical exercise, or when having sex. This is not only medically problematic but can have an extremely negative impact on a woman’s intimate relationships. Hymenectomy seeks to correct these problems, restoring comfort and improving confidence.

Sexual Empowerment

For some, seeking a hymenectomy can be a form of sex-positive empowerment. Whether they feel self-conscious about the appearance of their vagina or are wanting to improve their comfort, hymenectomy is seen as a route to enhanced self-confidence, comfort, and body-positivity.

The Procedure

A hymenectomy takes 30 minutes or less to complete and is a very straightforward procedure. Our gynaecology surgeons are hugely experienced and will work to achieve the results you are looking for.

It is your choice to be awake during the procedure or not. You may choose between local or general anaesthesia. Our goal is to support you in feeling as comfortable as possible.

Recovery

After the procedure, you will be monitored for a couple of hours at most before being sent home to recover. We always recommend you have a friend or family member drive you home where you should rest.

You will be given instructions on pain relief, personal hygiene, and activity limitations. Usually, it is recommended to avoid sexual intercourse for 4-6 weeks following the procedure, to prevent infection or premature tearing of stitches. Most patients can typically return to work within a couple of days.

Rest assured, if you have any questions or concerns during your recovery, our team is available to help.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Hymenectomy Painful?

Hymenectomy is an intimate procedure, so it’s no wonder many women are worried about pain levels. Rest assured that with modern anaesthesia techniques and supported post-op pain management, a hymenectomy is not considered to be a painful procedure. Even post-op, the discomfort you may experience is usually mild and certainly manageable.

Will There be Visible Scarring?

Our surgeons prioritise minimally invasive techniques. This means that, in most cases, there is no visible scarring. And while you’re healing, any stitches that have been used are dissolvable.

Will a Hymenectomy Affect My Fertility?

A hymenectomy does not affect fertility or prevent you from becoming pregnant. You can have a hymenectomy and still have children in the future.

Final Words

A hymenectomy is a fast, straightforward, and often empowering procedure for women facing hymen-related challenges or insecurities. Whether seeking a hymenectomy yourself is driven by aesthetic desires or a medical issue, at Gynaedoctors we understand that pursuing a hymenectomy is a deeply personal decision and we are here to support you every step of the way.
